Randi is “my virtual daughter”. She is the “heart and soul” of Montefiore Medical Center. She is a social worker, mother, widow who is the founder and director of the Caregiver Support Program which has grown to three centers, and a significant pioneer in this phase of patient care which is family care.
She was a major support for the family of the conjoined twins whose separation done by the team led by Dr. Goodrich went worldwide on media. Dr. Goodrich was the first physician to die of COVID-19 and Randi was responsible for the care and bereavement of the Twins’ mother. Randi has been following the separated twins for the past three years and has been a source of strength for the family.
She and her team were assigned for emotional support for the entire hospital campuses since there were no family visits for COVID-19 patients. The four main centers became a focus of support nutritionally and emotionally.
They had over 30,000 visits to the Caregiver Centers from mid-March – mid-May. Food was supplied for visits to the centers by charity mostly donated by the Board members of Montefiore Medical Center.
Her team offered solace at times of distress with the comforting environment. Randi oversaw her team from home because of her age She was available 24/7 for decision. The psychiatry department found that this environment was needed for the medical staff.
She oversaw three areas namely, Staff Emotional Support Line, the support centers for refreshment and respite, and expedited referrals to psychiatry for short term treatment related to COVID-19.
Randi is a widowed mother raising her children alone after her husband died of a brain tumor. She is expecting her first grandchild this summer.
