Ian Reviews the Eye Symmetry Wombi Fish surfboard:
The Eye Symmetry Wombi Fish surfboard.
Eye Symmetry surfboards was started by Max Stewart in Sydney Australia, his mission was to create a high quality, high performance epoxy product which not only looked stunning but was so well made it would outlast a regular PU surfboard.
Max has been producing small runs of boards on his frequent visits to the Basque region of Spain since 2016 and In order to meet the burgeoning demand PUKAS are stoked to announce an exclusive 3 board collaboration with Eye Symmetry.
At first glance the the Wombi Fish looks to have a pretty simple design but on closer inspection you’ll find some neat little features which led to the success of Max’s original Cali Quad in Europe and the rest of the world. The wide and generous outline has a full nose and a medium swallow tail. There is a very slight hip that starts at the front fins and exits the tail. This almost indiscernible attribute was copied from a quad shaped by Skip Frye for Tom Carroll. This “hip” allows the Wombi Fish to release the tail and speed up transitions.
The Wombi Fish has some interesting bottom contours; a simple rolled entry at the nose blends into Max’s signature quad concave just forward of the chest, between the feet you’ll find a double within a single which flows into spiral vee out through the fins and off the tail.
To loosen the board further, Max has flattened the outer edge of the rails creating a very subtle bevel rail which frees the board earlier when initiating the turn. Max’s complex concaves and the shallow rocker have resulted in a brilliant small wave Fish which comes alive in weaker conditions.
All the team at Boardshop are very excited to be stocking Max’s truly beautiful surfboards and we’d be happy to consider taking an unwanted surfboard from your quiver as a part exchange against a shiny new Eye Symmetry stick. These boards are also available to custom order on our brilliant ‘Board Builder’. All the details regarding Part Exchange and the Board Builder can be found on the Boardshop.co.uk home page.
