For the first time in U.S. history, agricultural industry workers have been declared “essential” due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Without these workers, the food supply would break down. There would be no fruit, vegetables, dairy, poultry, meat, or seafood products in our stores.
In Washington State, an estimated 90% of these Ag workers are Latinos and their rates of Covid infection are extremely alarming.
Like other first responders who are serving on the front lines, Ag workers are getting exposed to the virus at work. This crisis is compounded because many Ag workers live below the poverty line without access to health insurance or sick leave benefits.
They often live in crowded substandard housing and struggle to feed their own families.
Everyone needs food to survive. Now, more than ever, agricultural workers are essential to our existence.
We know Washingtonians care about safeguarding our food supply but in order to do so we must support agricultural workers.
This pandemic is a crisis and Ag Industry Employers are not responding to it with a sense of urgency.
State government sets the standards and the food industry is responsible for a safe workplace.
We need the Governor and the Legislature to immediately adopt stronger, permanent, enforceable standards to protect farmworkers and the food supply.
Your voice will make a difference.
Please contact the Governor and your legislators today.
