“At 3:00am on July 15, 2019, kia’i bound themselves to the cattle guard on Mauna Kea Access Road to prevent vehicles from reaching the peak to begin construction on the Thirty Meter Telescope. Eight Mauna protectors braved the pre-dawn cold and the blistering heat for 11 hours, assisted by Mauna Medic Healers Hui and other kia‘i, providing food, hydration, massages for their aching muscles and music for their spirits. Thanks to these and other amazing collective efforts, no construction equipment was able to head up the Mauna today. One of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever witnessed in the struggle happened in the last hour of this successful direct action: Dr. Jonathan Osorio played for his daughter Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio, who sang harmony with her father whilst still chained to the cattle guard.” – Mikey Inouye
