One reason for this trend may be the unregulated marketing of e-cigarettes, according to a new study.
Researchers followed nearly 2,300 school students and more than 2,400 college students who reported never having vaped.
The participants were asked to fill out surveys to see how much they remembered about e-cigarette marketing campaigns on TV, radio, billboards, in retails stores and on the Internet.
The results showed that children 12 to 17 who reported remembering store-based e-cigarette ads were twice as likely to start vaping within two-and-a-half years.
Young adults who were influenced by both in-store and TV marketing were 30 percent more likely to start vaping.
The authors say, “These findings underscore the need for regulation of ENDS marketing, particularly in retail stores.”
They suggest that the U.S. Food and Drug administration consider regulations that reduce the size, visibility and availability of e-cigarette advertisements and products in stores.
